The mesmerising Hope Whitelock is releasing her new single ‘Kafkaesque’ tomorrow. The song is a soft pop song driven by her beautiful vocals and poignant song writing. “‘Karkaesque’ is about all the people who constantly told me I “had to travel” and that I would “find myself”. 1. I’m poor. Travelling is crazy hard when you don’t have any money and you’re from rural America. 2. I don’t like myself, and I don’t need to travel the world to find that out.”
She’s brutally honest and despite the fact that I felt myself thinking I felt sorry for her, I also feel that that is exactly the opposite of what Hope Whitelock is trying to make others think. She is a poet, an artist and an open-hearted soul struggling the way many others do too. Her single listens like a mantra, a therapeutic pop track that can offer comfort in knowing you are not the only one.
Hope is based in Boulder, CO, and is pursuing a PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder, the depression, imposter syndrome and self loathing that come from pursuing her studies have made for some interesting songs and lyrics. So if it was a good idea is up to you to decide, but I think that in this modern day society we are all struggling and turning your struggles into bittersweet pop songs is a talent I would love to possess.
