A soft and warm, powerfully emotional new EP was released by Belgian singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kristiaan Deruytter who’s better known as Kristo.
His soulful voice and subtle piano-driven soundscape shines brightly on EP-opener ‘I Am Not Enough’, a song written for his father, “I wrote this song for my father who is my biggest inspiration. Growing up in a very musical family was usually a lot of fun since I was always surrounded by music when I was younger. Yet it can also put a lot of pressure on a young musician who is looking for his own musical identity. This song reflects those mixed feelings I had about this.”
This solo project is clearly driven by passion and a need to tell story, which is one of Kirsto’s strengths. Add the warm tones of saxophone player Frank Deruytter and you have a beautifully colourful sound. More emotion enters the mix on ‘Do I Miss You More’, which is a song proudly highlighting the grand voice of Kristo. Title track ‘Childhood’ plays on warmer musical tones and brings another heartfelt ballad to this EP, while ‘Morning Blues’ is that bit more light-hearted and a great and soft closer of Kristo’s new EP.
The track that most stands out to us is ‘Morning Blues’, his hazy tones and carefully crafted soundscapes make Kristo a musician to keep your eyes and ears out for. On the entire four track counting EP all we hear is eclectic sounds and passion-driven compositions, and that is something hard to fake. We need more Kristo.
