Album: James – Yummy

Text by Rene Rosierse

Manchester’s indie rockers James released their 18th studio album ‘Yummy’ today. It’s only a year ago that we’ve reviewed their double studio album ‘Be opened by the wonderful’ in celebration of James’s 40th anniversary. During the recording of their reworked back catalogue for that album the band were already working on ‘Yummy’. Now it finally sees the light of day.

‘Yummy’ is an album which deals with several serious issues and is cheerful and musically uplifting at the same time. The lyrics are typical 2024 subjects which we can all relate to, but needs to be addressed by Tim Booth every now and then.

Opener ‘Is this love’ is a typical James anthem and deals with love in all of its forms. It sets the tone of the album straight away. Despite the sometimes critical subjects James always brings these matters with a positive vibe. A good example is ‘Life’s a fucking miracle’ which is the most joyful song of the album. ‘Better with you’ is a love song between two people, while ‘Mobile God’ is about the love of our smartphone. More relevant issues are dealt in ‘Hey’ (media fears and conspiracy theories), ‘Our World’ (our world isn’t your world) and ‘Rogue’ (aging).

James has the ability to set our mind to work and provides us some great tunes at the same time. The band are touring the UK in June, go see them and sing along. Life’s a fucking miracle!
