Album: Razorlight – Planet Nowhere

Razorlight exceeded expectations with the release of their brand new album ‘Planet Nowhere’, festive and colourful, this dynamic collection of tracks is one we could listen to on repeat.

The album marks the return of the band on which Johnny Borrell said: “It’s out, ‘Planet Nowhere’ is our first album back in six years and the first by all of us since 2008. I’ve said it before but we truly didn’t think this would happen.” Although this might be a surprise for the band themselves, and their grand fanbase, their sound doesn’t come with any surprise; it’s just as elaborate and exciting as it’s always been. Confident, driving and dynamic, the album opens with hit ‘Zombie Love’, undoubtedly our favourite, ‘Taylor Swift = US Soft Propaganda’ follows later on, on which Borrell’s spoken vocals shine brightly. It’s another short but sweet, critical track that shows what this band is made of.

“We were never going to put more music out that we didn’t believe in, but I genuinely feel this could be a cult favourite Razorlight record.” ‘Dirty Luck’ is another refreshing favourite, an almost ballad-like pop rock track with warm harmonies and powerful hooks, followed by ‘Scared of Nothing’, which comes with a punk-fuelled rhythm. The band have brought together gentle melodies, 70’s-tinged roots rock, anthemic pop rock, and jangly indie pop and created a pleasant mix of sounds that shows their still existing relevance within the modern musical landscape.

There is the thumping ‘Empire Service’, softly swaying indie track ‘Cyclops’, and album closer ‘April Ends’ that make this album such an energising one. The album is the start of a new chapter for Razorlight, and they celebrated by playing record stores across the country. Next, they’ll be performing a sold out O2 Academy Brixton, despite tickets having already run out, the band’s plans continue into 2025, starting with a set at Kaiser Chief’s big outdoor extravaganza at Temple Newsam Park in Leeds!
