EP: See Emily Play – STILL PLAYING

‘Still Playing’ is the latest EP by See Emily Play, aptly named and sounding as playful as can be expected. The Sheffield-born, Liverpool-based singer songwriter expands on her existing chamber-pop roots on this collection of tracks.

This four track EP opens unapologetically and theatrically with soaring vocals and a stunning soundcape on ‘YOKO ONO WAS SEVEN YEARS OLDER THAN JOHN LENNON’, and no they do not know about short song titles. She convinces through sharp vocals and compositions that thunder like high speed trains, a recurring theme on this collection of tracks. ‘WHAT THE HELL IS BDD’ gives a comedic insight into having ailments that are yet to be commonly known. Hunting at influences taken from pop, Americana with a touch of elevated jazz and lyrical hints at the devil have made See Emily Play a new favourite.

Tongue in cheek and unserious yet undoubtedly captivating and rather addictive, ‘DO YOU LOVE ME’ plays with elements of blues and warm, bass-driven hooks. A slowly burning plea requesting love or a short romance, the third track on See Emily Play’s EP is rather relatable. Lyrically not as challenging as the others but musically a strong favourite. Lyrically the EP’s closing statement ‘I’M BOWING OUT’ is a soaring theatrical rock ballad that showcases the versatile sound of See Emily Play, on this EP she captivates, mesmerises, and surprises from start till finish.
