Live: Clann An Drumma brought us all together through tribal sounds

A few months ago I got introduced to the tribal sounds of Scottish outfit Clann An Drumma, they moved something deep within me from the moment I first heard their music. Last week they touched down at Newcastle’s The Grove. Together with my parents, who raised me amongst pagans, and many others, I let the music move me as Clann An Drumma awakened the gods and the fire within us.

It has been a while since music truly reached every fibre of my being, but Clann An Drumma achieved it, from the moment they stepped on stage, and still while I’m writing this as I relive the entire night. As the band stepped on their stage, decorated with their ancestors, they awakened a fire in me that’s not been dimmed since, emotions were felt throughout the room as the audience connected not just with the band but also with each other. A gathering of likeminded souls that are well and truly connected by music can only ever result in something most humanly.

The Scots brought out the big drums, the bag pipes, the bodhran and the kilts and did what they were born to do. As they shared their tribal sounds the venue and its moving bodies started to sweat out the worries of the day-to-day life, all consumed completely by the music. Heart and soul were shared without judgment as we all danced like no one was watching. The proud Scottish quartet gave it there all and worked out the entire evening including an encore and headed straight towards the merchandise table afterwards, showing their gratitude and appreciation for those that had turned up and shared the evening with them.

So aside from musically talented, and physically fit – there’s no other way when playing tribal drums for nearly two hours straight, they are also kind and appreciative. Clann An Drumma’s live performance in Newcastle felt like a reset, a reconnection to our roots, as they reminded me personally where I have come from and what it is that matters most to me; connection. Listening to their music now, even when online, I am transported back to the evening I felt like my heartbeat was one with the tribal rhythm of Clann An Drumma and our ancestors.
