Girl Afraid – Sugar

After discovering ‘Dutch Courage’ we figured it would be a good idea to keep an eye and ear on alternative rock outfit Girl Afraid. The band have just released their new single ‘Sugar’ which takes a lot more influence from bands such as Queens of the Stone Age and Fontaines D.C. and the band aren’t afraid to use a daft amount of distortion. The messy and mainly loud intro threw me off for the short amount of time it lasted nor did it seem to add much to the track overall, however this loud, angry and hasty spirited song awoke something in me and I’m enjoying it. It’s a track that calls my worst morning hangovers to mind and is more fast paced than what the band have previously released. It showcases Girl Afraid’s inspiration taken from bands such as IDLES, Fontaines D.C. and good ol’ classics The Strokes.

Guitarist James Massey said about the single: “The pace of this tune differs from our past songs but also shows that we can play more than the more down tempo indie we’re known for and incorporate heavier sounds into our music.” I could not have said it any better. I must admit that even though on record it wouldn’t be my first choice to listen to, I am more than curious what wild mosh pit would come from this in a live music venue or on a big piece of festival green.

Girl Afraid are finding their talents and their sound and even though I am not the biggest fan of ‘Sugar’, I think it’s a great way for the band to show us part of their future sound. It’s their raw energy that I admire, and I’m just a sucker for loud guitars and angry men…
