One of the not many bands we saw perform live this year was Newcastle-based trio Cat Ryan. With their creative spin on art rock and shoegaze the band sets themselves apart from every other indie band. Their band name has caused some confusion in the past and possibly still does, since singer Mary-Anne’s name is not… Cat Ryan. However, ‘Mary Shelley Song’ is really, kind of, about Mary Shelley! It’s their latest and infectious single, one that in general is more of an inside joke between friends, but still mentions the English novelist.
‘Mary Shelley Song’ showcases the bands’ ingenious lyricism and musical compositions. Hooks that come without warning make sure the song stays a surprise throughout. Mary-Anne shares part of the creative process behind the single: “It’s a very unique song and, despite the title, it’s only the first verse that’s about Mary Shelley. Essentially, I showed my friends a new song I’d been working on and one of them came up with the first three lines on the spot. It was funny because it doesn’t fully make sense, but that’s sort of the theme of the song: it kind of makes sense to us, but other people will probably wonder how the lyrics were created and what they’re supposed to be about.”
