Casiocenz – Party of One
This grand, thumping and experimental sound listens like a rollercoaster and was sent to us in the form of Casiocenz’s debut album. ‘Party of One’ pulls us in with its synth rock sound, soft and hazy vocals and a sound that is rather otherworldly. Intro of the album, ‘Wherever You Will Be’ is instantly hard-hitting and blends different genres which is a theme recurring throughout the rest of the album. This overall uplifting and fast paced, festive sound, showcases the unexpected and takes its listener on a journey through space and time…
After the first few, Casiocenz takes a breath on ‘Song for a Six String’, its sound being a wandering pop sound with sugar sweet vocals. ‘I Don’t Care Anymore’ is an almost theatrical 60’s hit while a collaboration with Space Gravy brings the soft and intricate ‘Around’. If we hadn’t mentioned that this album is filled with surprises just yet, then now is certainly the time, on ‘Me vs. Morrissey vs. Lacey’ we encounter a combination of cover and original of ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’. After this rollercoaster of sounds and emotions, the album closes with ‘The Flight’, a theatrical and horn-infused song that makes the perfect ending of this poetical story Casiocenz has written!
INOHA – The Next Stop
Texas-based alt / indie outfit INOHA have just released their debut EP, ‘The Next Stop’, which is an upbeat and eccentric, energising collection of five songs opening up with a theatrical track that delves into topics of relationship insecurities and telling the story of someone who was cheated on. After the introspective ‘Murder at the Peach Tree’, ‘Bullet Boy’ introduces a more daring sound that conveys relapsing into an addiction. This fast paced drum-stomping track comes with a pair of soft vocals that sound natural and unforced. The first four tracks on the EP take on a more indie rock sound than closer ‘Fire in the Sun’ which is a more soaring and passionate delivery of a story talking about feeling useless…
On their debut EP you can find the first single the band released, ‘ALUCARDA’ is an energetic surf rock track with delicious riffs that talks about people who emotionally drain you and having no escape from them. The subjects and stories INOHA tell are close to the heart and through powerful vocal deliveries gain extra meaning and power. INOHA have settled on a sound that works for them and their audience and ‘The Next Stop’ is a great example of what they do best!
Arson Whales – Galactopus
Eleven tracks are still not enough to convey the electronic, poetic and robotic sound of Arson Whales simply because we can’t get enough. It is completely different from the other sounds and reviews you will find on our platform, but Arson Whales combines an indie and surf rock-like sound with hints of electronic pop and synth rock and brings it all together in the form of eleven songs on their debut album ‘Galactopus’. Arson Whales is a band of semi aquatic terrestrials floating on the scene to bubble their debut album to the surface.
Talk about a strong debut, a favourite on the album is second track ‘Upside Down’, a driving and thumping track with strong and sharp vocals and an eclectic soundscape with subtle hints of electro rock. We hear warm vocal harmonies on ‘Gray Dorian’, rather poppy compositions on ‘Reverse The Rule’ and ‘Zephyr and Sycophant’, while ‘Whales Fall’ is a tad more experimental and sounding a tad more distorted. Arson Whales closes their debut with ‘Blackhole’ which is surprisingly a distortion of parts of all songs on the album with nearly whispering, spoken vocals, a sonic soundscape and an exciting rhythm from the beginning until the very end!
