EP: Smallpools – Ghost Town Road (east)

An undeniably catchy new EP was released by Smallpools, the alternative pop trio brought us our soundtrack(s) to summer with ‘Ghost Town Road (east)’. The EP consists of five tracks all building in colourful anthemic pop soundscapes and soft vocals.

‘Swayze’ and ‘Night Shift’ bring a smile to our face, and brings an uplifting and energising, hooking sound to our living rooms! The trio are entering a bold new era with this cinematic collection of tracks, and it’s the first part of the upcoming full length album that will be out later this year. This is Smallpools at their most reflective, explosive, and arena-ready. With their sound they cross barriers between the genres of indie, pop, and rock, with subtle hints at surf pop and rock as well as a more synth-driven sound.

The project is based between Los Angeles and Nashville, and reflected on the evolution of each city in the decade since their debut single hit streaming platforms. “When the band first started, the goal was to play the free Monday nights at the Satellite, that’s all we wanted to do”, the Satellite used to be a breeding ground for ambitious local indie bands but closed permanently during the pandemic. Four years later, the space still lies vacant. Meanwhile, they’ve seen Nashville equally overrun by Brooklyn transplants, reality TV producers and bachelorette parties.

Despite their humble initial goals, the band have grown out to be a known name on the scene with a back catalogue of well crafted indie pop songs and anthemic indie soundscapes that are hard to forget after you’ve heard them just once! ‘Motorbike (Wild Ones)’ must be one of our favourites, but the entire EP sounds like a ray of sunshine, listen to it below.
