Album: Pynch – Beautiful Noise

‘Beautiful Noise’ is a collection of well-produced transformative dream-gaze songs from the musical hands of Pynch. Ten tracks bring a combination of distortion, transparency, and eccentricity to our ears.

‘Forever’ is a perfectly warm introduction to the band’s sound as it opens the ten-track counting album that firmly places them onto our radar. Hazy guitar tones and a strong rhythm make for a pleasant listen and that theme continues on ‘Post-Punk / New-Wave’ which announces the band’s wish to combine genres and themes which we can completely find ourselves in. It is a catchy, almost anthemic single with spoken vocals and luscious harmonies. ‘Hanging on a Bassline’ punches and rumbles, making it a personal favourite of the album.

On ‘Beautiful Noise’ Pynch are less concerned with making sense of the world around them, and instead shift their gaze inward, taking a trip through love, death, fait, and the pursuit of meaning through art. We hear that “this is for us” attitude on ‘The Supermarket’ which opens with delicious bass licks, while ‘How You Love Someone’ kicks off with a strong rhythm section. Filthy riffs enter the mix on ‘Microwave Rhapsody’, which makes this a solid second favourite of ‘Beautiful Noise’, which is incredibly aptly named. Its title track lives up to its name as well, showing the band’s ability to create riffing, rambling tracks with dynamic soundscapes and soft vocals that mumble and beg for our attention as they tell the stories that inspired the creation of this album.

‘Come Outside’ plays with samples of bird noises, brings some refreshing energy to this collection of tracks, and plays with influences taken from indie, an anthem on which the vocals of singer Spencer Enock shine brightest. This infectious energy is the energy we’ve been longing to hear, we hold on to it and try not to let it escape us, as it is almost daunting to think of this album ending. ‘It’s Wonderful’ is the soft introspective album closer that as soon as it ends makes us want to hit repeat, and relive this journey Pynch have created.

Produced by Enock in the band’s home studio, with drums recorded at Press Play Studios, ‘Beautiful Noise is a lo-fi odyssey that feels intimate, emotive, and ambitious. The band show their progress and how they’ve moved on from their debut. The album is a kaleidoscope of distortion, new-wave synths, breakbeats, and glitchy vocals presented in a DIY package.
