Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rob Lalain unveils his most personal and reflective body of work to date with the release of his new rock album ‘The Way We Were’. Led by the emotionally resonant single ‘Day Or Night’, the record continues Lalain’s remarkable creative resurgence, a journey that has seen the self-taught musician rebuild a prolific career decades after first stepping away from the industry.
Hi! Could you introduce yourself, your genre, and your musical influences?
“Rob Lalain. Rock. The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Oasis.”
What inspired you to start making music and what inspires you to keep going?
“I discovered The Beatles on their 20th anniversary of coming to America. From there I thought if these 4 guys from Liverpool could do it, maybe I could too… Thousands of songs written later, I guess I could too. I still do it today because I love doing it. It’s a release for me to get the noise out of my head. I often think what an incredible gift I have been given to write music and lyrics. And, if what I write can relate to you or someone, then great!”
Where do you, in general, get inspiration for your music and song-writing?
“Inspiration really comes from everywhere. In regards to this album, my life was being torn about with the passing of my father. The first song I wrote was “No More”. It was originally titled “A Symphony of Rage” as I was dealing with my father and then here in the States we had all of the political fighting going on. So it was really me saying enough. I don’t need this… But I write about things in my past, my present, and even what I see in the future. Sometimes I see a show on TV or watch a movie and get inspiration from those. It really is magical when it is all done.”
Who would you like to work with in the near future and where would you like to perform in the next three years?
“I would love to work with Paul McCartney or Noel Gallager. I know it’s a long shot but there it is. In terms of performing, since I play all the instruments on my albums I would first need to put a band together. I am having discussions but I am also five songs into my next album…”
Which musical achievements are you most proud of?
“I think the biggest thing for me was coming back after 20+ years and having my first album hit over a million streams.”
What do you hope to achieve by releasing music with followers old and new?
“I hope there is something everyone can relate to in my music. I hope they enjoy it.”
What are your plans for the new year and what are some of your goals and dreams?
“For this year, I have just finished working with my production team on music visualizers for my new album, and I am in the middle of all the press related activities. I have also written five new songs for my next album. I do believe there may be a surprise show or two in the future.”
Aside from music, what are some of your hobbies and interests, we’d love to know more about you as a person!
“Outside of music I am a big Football (US) fan and follow my Detroit Lions (NFL) and Michigan State Spartans (NCAA). I also love getting out on my boat and fishing.”
