On his EP ‘Fleeing the Shore’, Axel Flóvent has woven together six dreamy alternative pop songs. Beautifully layered, he guides us through fleeing the shore, and then finding it again.
Flóvent opens this new musical chapter with a beautifully layered dream that showcases his expansive vocal range. A warm musical soundscape contrasts his sharp vocals on the first track of ‘Fleeing the Shore’. He tells stories through personal notes, a well produced soundscape supports his unaltered voice. Cinematic yet subtle and stripped back compositions made me feel like he was sat next to me in the living room, listening to the title track of his EP as we experienced the journey together.
Axel wrote something that tugged on the heartstrings without overdoing it, as he simply shared his feelings in a most humble way. On ‘Nowhere’, more layers get peeled back, and as soon as his voice joins the instruments goosebumps creep up on my arms. Echoes elevate this heartfelt release as he sings about being without direction and burnt bridges, sharing feelings that are rather familiar to me. Instead of writing an EP Flóvent has written a therapy session.
We continue our session being guided by the soft harmonious sound of ‘Over One Night’, on which he softly hums about not wanting to cause any pain, yet acknowledging it’s not always something we can avoid. On ‘Reassurance’ he plays the guitar that bit more bare, hinting at influences taken from folk, bringing an on-the-road-esque vibe to the EP. Soft “ooh”s make it a personal favourite, with its polite, kind notion of sound. Nature is called upon on the track before he closes with the song that most allows his voice to shine.
Choir-like chapters string together ‘In the Grass’, which is one of the most uplifting sounding tracks on the EP. ‘Fleeing the Shore’ is a short story of dealing with love lost and bridges burnt and has helped me make peace with the pain I’ve cause throughout my own personal journey, commendable, not always pleasant, yet I’ve felt supported from start till finish. I knew that Axel Flóvent was worth listening to, and a prolific song writer, but ‘Feeling the Shore’ has exceeded my expectations and will be stuck on repeat for the foreseeable.
