Get to know Nelson King

Some artists are just not made to fit in a box, their music is refined and fuelled by passion, but nothing about them is conventional, nor like any others. Nelson King is such an artist, and with a new album on the horizon, we thought it was time to get to know this particular artist a little better!

Hi! Could you briefly introduce yourself, who you are, where you’re from and what your favourite colour is? “I am Nelson King, a writer and singer of songs. I’m colour-blind and one of the few colours I can see is blue, blue is my favourite colour.”

You are a solo artist that creates a band-sound, how do you go about creating new songs and sounds and what instruments do you use for it? “I usually have a vibe in mind when I write a new song; fast/ slow/ ballad/ rocker, also I like using unusual chords, some I construct myself. I tend to write on the guitar mostly although on rare occasions I have used other instruments such as piano, mandolin and even bass guitar. Usually words and music at the same time.”

You have released quite the number of albums already, why do you think you prefer releasing albums over singles or EP? “I have recorded almost 80 albums (I have only released 25 so far) I am very prolific so the only way to get as many songs out as I reasonably can (without over exposure) is to release albums. Also I’ve never really liked the singles/ EP format, I much prefer listening to an album.”

What artists do you like to listen to in your spare time, or when you are gearing up to write new music for your next release? “I’m always either working on other artists songs or my own so I don’t really get much spare time to listen to anything else. Sometimes when I’m driving I listen to ELO, Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles.”

What is one of your proudest moments of your musical career so far? “It was when I had my first song covered by another artist, It was ‘Saturday Night’ released on a Nashville label.”

What are three of the things that you would like to achieve in the next few years within your musical career? “In the next few years it would be great to have a million selling album, play a sell out show at the Albert Hall and have a song in a Hollywood blockbuster.”

When’s the next release coming and could you tell us a little bit more about it? “I hope to release another album at the end of 2022! I like to release at least two a year, but I’ve not decided which one yet…”
