Video: Van Common – Olympia

Dutch producer, singer and songwriter Sebastiaan van Ravenhorst is better known as Van Common and has returned after his hiatus with single and video ‘Olympia’. The ethereal indie pop sound is a grand and eclectic one with a great and powerful soundscape and his soft and natural voice in the midst of the mix.

‘Olympia’ is the third single from the debut album that is due to be released on the 12th of May, one that has long been worked towards. About how his brand new single came to be, Sebastiaan said: “Reality has never been more unreal, and I’m not sure what to do about it. But I did make this song, so here goes nothing.” The single is a softly swaying pop sound with a catchy chorus, the video shows Van Common being operated, seemingly unphazed by what is happening on and around him. The video gave me goosebumps and made me feel uncomfortable, which, as a result of experiencing art, is sometimes a necessary evil.

The song’s narrative is a relatable one yet despite it being quite the heavy topic, the song sounds light and uplifting. Written, produced and mixed by Van Common, and mastered by Joel Krozer, the single is completely and entirely his own, which is commendable nowadays. His latest efforts portray a novel sense of brightness, as if struck by an inner sun… Listen and watch ‘Olympia’ below.
